Easter Sunday brought twice the Friar fun, as San Diego finished its split-squad weekend with a home game in Peoria alongside the conclusion of the Mexico City Series south of the border.
In Mexico, the bats came out to play big-time in a 21-6 crushing of the Astros. Peoria told a different story, as the Padres fell to the visiting Angels, 11-2. In both places, there was plenty to break down and catch you up on if you missed anything during your egg hunt. Sweeter than any chocolate, it’s the Spring Scoop!
GAME RESULTS
The 21 runs scored in Mexico marked a new high for the Padres this spring, besting their previous mark of 17. The home runs did it for San Diego, as they hit five of them against Houston, including three in a 9-run first inning.
The Arizona half of the Padres struggled at the plate. They, too, hit a pair of home runs. But both were solo shots that couldn’t keep the 11-2 game close. Check out our biggest takeaways from both games in our double recap.
ICYMI PART 1
A couple of noteworthy things went down late night in Mexico City we would be remiss if we overlooked. Like this epic dance-off between Orbit the Astros mascot and the Padres Friar. Let it be known the Friar will go to any length to win a dance-off.
ICYMI PART 2
Also late last night in Mexico: the Padres may have lost, but this couple won. She said yes!
HAPPY EASTER!
With the Padres in Mexico City, how about some bilingual Easter wishes from Yangervis Solarte and Jabari Blash?
BUNNY HOP
We’re all for replacing eggs with Easter baseballs, but nice touch keeping the bunny ears for batting practice.
NEVER GROW UP
And when Melvin Upton Jr. sees your ears and asks if he can borrow them for his turn in the cage, well, that’s the coolest Easter move of all.
POST OF THE DAY
That moment when you get Matt Kemp to sign your Matt Kemp jersey. Just wait for the face.
MARVELOUS MEXICO STAR OF THE DAY
Getting the start in his native Mexico, Padres pitcher Cesar Vargas enjoyed quite the amount of attention in his homeland, including a spot on ESPN Deportes’ SportsCenter. Vargas made it a day to remember, pitching 3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out five.
