The left-handed hitting Brett Wallace got a second straight start at first base Tuesday against Phillies’ right-hander Charlie Morton as Wil Myers got his first day off of the season.

Padres manager Andy Green discussed using his bench and giving starters days off early in the season during his pregame media session Tuesday.

“I want to get starters some rest on this trip,” said Green. “When guys have only played two or three straight games in spring training, it’s probably not wise to play them 10 straight at this point of the season.

“You might see a guy getting a break staggered every day on this trip,” said Green. “It’s a tough travel trip. And sometimes what you do in April reaps dividends at the end of the year.

“Wil has had very consistent at-bats. I don’t like sit someone after a 0-for-4. It leaves a bad feeling.”

Green said rookie outfielder Jabari Blash likely wouldn’t be getting a start in Philadelphia because Blash is a right-handed hitter and the Phillies are starting four right-handed pitchers with good splits against right-handed hitters.

“I’m not quite sure on Jabari,” said Green. “His day will certainly come, but I’m not sure when. If anyone knows what it feels like to sit on the bench for a month straight it is me. Don’t get upset or read too much into Blash’s situation here.

“It kind of runs into where we are right now. Strong split right-handers in first three right-handed starters. “You don’t get to design other people’s rotations. There is a stronger desire to get your bench guys in there when they have the best chance to succeed. You have to take opportunities when they present themselves.”

Alexi Amarista was back in the lineup Tuesday. “Alexi was great for us yesterday,” said Green.
