But the Padres also received a left-handed reliever who has become one of the top bullpen prospects in the Padres system.
Jose Torres has split the 2016 season between Advanced Single-A Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio, with a combined 2.19 earned run average in 61 2/3 innings over 45 appearances. He has 61 strikeouts against 22 walks and has allowed only 41 hits for a 1.02 WHIP (baserunners allowed per inning) and a .191 opponents’ batting average.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound 22-year-old from Venezuela has had more success since being promoted to San Antonio on June 6. In 25 appearances with the Missions, Torres has a 1.24 ERA with 20 hits allowed and 36 strikeouts with 12 walks in 36 1/3 innings. His WHIP with the Missions is 0.88 and his opponents’ batting average is .165. He also has two saves with San Antonio.
Torres, who is already on the Padres’ 40-man roster and was in the Major League spring training camp last spring, had a 3.55 ERA in 25 1/3 innings over 20 appearances with Lake Elsinore earlier this season. He also spent three days with Triple-A El Paso in July but did not appear in a game.
Torres was originally signed as a starting pitcher by Oakland in 2010. He was moved to the bullpen in 2014.
